With a good start to the new season, the Denver City softball team continued their solid non-district showing in the Slaton Tournament, where they picked up the runner-up prize after falling to Ralls.
In the third meeting of the young season, Ralls proved to be too much to handle as the errors piled in the Fillies gameplay, earning the 12-5 victory.
Three Lady Rabbits recorded two RBIs, including standout Peyton Calderon, who also hit a dinger in the bottom of the fifth inning, Jadeyn Arthur and Brisa Moreno.
The Fillies had scoring opportunities with 10 runners stranded on base in the loss.
Heidi Gonzales finished with a .500 at bat percentage, recording a RBI. Johnna Hix, Jewel Santillan, Heidi Gonzales and Haylee Villareal also finished with an RBI to their name.
Haleigh Gonzales picked up the loss, where she struck out two, allowed seven runs on five hits in her three and two-third innings showing. Grace Cavazos was in the circle for all seven inning for Ralls, where she struck out three, walked six and allowed five runs on nine hits.
Despite trailing 3-0 early in the middle of the first inning, Denver City had to dig deep to come back, toppling Ralls 8-6 in the first game on day two of tournament action.
Engineering the team to the win was Hix, as she hit two RBIs in her .500 showing at the plate. Haleigh also recorded two RBIs, both of them on singles to get on base. Santillan picked up the win, as she struck out two, walked one and allowed three hits in her full three inning outing. Haleigh earned the save, as she struck out one, allowed three runs on two hits in the final two innings. For Ralls, Jadeyn Arthur hit three RBIs in her one-for-two showing and hitting a home run in the top of the first inning that brought in two runs.
In their second game on the second day, Denver City recorded a shut out victory over Lockney, 10-0, to earn their place in the championship game.
Kat Chavez hit two RBIs with a double that led the way for the Fillies. Kayton Pence made the most of her lone at bat, recording two RBIs on her single.
Picking up her third win of the tournament was Haleigh, as she struck out two and allowed two hits in her two inning showing. Santillan picked up the save, also striking out two and allowed two hits in her two innings in the circle.
In the first game of opening day in their showing, Denver City took care of Lovington (NM), 11-8 in the offensive showcase. Hanna, Saenz and Heidi each finished one-for two on the day, with the Gonzales duo getting on base with a double and hitting two RBIs respectively. Getting the victory would be Haleigh, as she pitched two full inning where she struck out three, walked two and allowed six hits. Santillan recorded the save for the Fillies.
The pitching staff of Denver City shined as Haleigh and Santillan allowed no combined hits in the shutout victory over Lubbock Roosevelt, 13-0.
Leading the charge offensively for the Fillies would be Chavez, hitting two-for-two in her at bat apperances, hitting two RBI singles. Hix went one-for-two, getting on base with a double. Hanna went one-for-two, hitting a team-high three RBIs. Saenz lone hit was crucial, bringing in two runs in her .333 batting performance. Haleigh picked up the win once again for the Fillies, striking one out and walking two in her two inning showing. Santillan picked up the save, striking out three in her performance.
Denver City now will take on Tahoka at home on Tuesday prior to heading to the Seminole tournament on March 2-4.
